Preparing Seniors For Respite Care

Mar 17, 2017 by Diane Genovese

If you have been considering respite care services for your senior loved one, then this is one of the best things that you can do for yourself as a caregiver. Respite, or fill-in care is a great way for senior caregivers to get a much-needed reprieve to take care of themselves and of their own responsibilities. Whether you are considering care for a few hours a week, for a vacation or just need a day or two off to yourself, respite services are a great asset.

However, there are many caregivers who get understandably nervous about bringing in respite care services and who wonder how their senior loved one will react to a new caregiver looking after them. The first and most important thing to remember is that respite services are often as beneficial to seniors as they are to the caregivers. They give the seniors a chance to have a break as well and to get the social engagement that comes from having a new caregiver in the home.

However, most primary care providers will still want to take a few steps to make sure they prepare their loved one for respite care. Here are some of the best ways to do this.

  • Make sure you tell your senior about their new respite services ahead of time
  • Be clear on your schedule so the transition is seamless for everyone involved
  • Try to arrange a time for the senior to meet their respite caregiver while you are there
  • Plan for activities during the day that your senior enjoys
  • Ask your senior loved one about how they feel about respite care so they feel as though their feelings are being addressed
  • Make sure to plan meals ahead so your senior is eating food that they enjoy

Keep these tips in mind if you are considering respite care for your loved one. The more you do to prepare them, the better off they will be.
